BUDDING
WRITERS - Article by James Brunt from 'PARTICIPATE'
magazine. Pupils from Manton Primary School and young mums who
meet at the Sure Start Centre became budding writers, following
projects with Nottinghamshire author Gwen Grant. The projects were
part of a successful Arts Council England application that has
enabled Gwen to write her next book and engage community
organisations in creative writing projects to share her book as it
develops. Bill Ball, Headteacher at Manton Primary School, said of
the project with Gwen, The quality of the work the pupils have
produced has been stunning. Gwen inspired the children to write
some incredibly thoughtful pieces of work. This has also been a
valuable learning experience for class teachers who have enjoyed
working in partnership with Gwen to help the children produce such
high quality writing. Following their project with Gwen, the young
mums group went on to produce an audio CD of their work at
Bluewater Studios. Participant Jackie F. said of the experience,
Gwen was very thorough and helpful with advice to become a better
writer. She is a brilliant tutor and gave me confidence to write
poetry and a short story, to read in front of other members and to
open myself to criticism. I know I speak for everyone who attended
when I say that it has been a brilliant six weeks. I will
certainly keep up my writing and strive to get a writing circle
going in the near future. Funded by Arts Council England, European
Regional Development Fund, Adult and Community Learning Service
and Sure Start West Bassetlaw.
