Bonny was suddenly wide awake.

With a catch of fear in her throat, she saw the same white shadow that had followed her in the graveyard begin to appear.

"Who are you?" She cried. "What do you want?"

The dazzling white figure smiled, a narrow brilliant evil smile.

"You know what I've come for," he said. "You can't escape me."

When Bonny inadvertently finds the object which the stranger so desperately wants, she is drawn into a mysterious and terrifying struggle between the Dazzling Clown and the kindly Black Monk.

Suddenly, the whole fate of Time and Eternity, good and evil, lies in the hands of Bonny Starr...

 Bonny delights in all she sees at the circus except for the Dazzling Clown, who afterwards haunts and torments her.  She would fall victim to his tricks were it not for a ghostly monk, who slipped out of his era when the soldiers of Henry Vlll sacked the monasteries.
The interest of these supernatural beings has been aroused because on her way to the circus, Bonny found and pocketed the Key to Eternity.
Gradually, the number of characters involved in the adventure expands: Bonny's brother, Alan, can see both clown and monk; the rag and bone man turns out to be the clown's Fetch. And an elderly neighbour proves to be a witch.  The setting, too, expands as the children travel through time to the edges of eternity.
